Horst Grütering (1958), originally born and raised in a suburb of Frankfurt/Main, moved to Amsterdam in 1982 to interrupt his studies in Industrial Design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy for a year. From this one year there have now become 41. For years he has worked with Mac Thiadens where he has realized many monumental design projects under the vlag of ‘FlexiMac’. Since 2010 he works under his own name horst4Dsign. Various projects from this collaboration can be seen on the website.
ZeitZeuge…?
Since my studies at the HFG (Hochschule für Gestaltung) in Offenbach am Main in 1979, I came into contact with students of the DES-IN group. They made alternative design of lamps from offset plates and recycled materials. Not to forget the controversial Reifensofa from this time. Two students then owned a store for alternative jewelry Zahnrad & Blümchen in Frankfurt-Sachsenhausen, who inspired me to investigate what I could do with old watch parts and Linotype matrices…
Since this time, I have been busy designing jewelry, in which the technical grace of gears, stators and other fine mechanical parts are the starting point of my creations.
They are an alternative to the usual ‘men’s jewelry’ such as tiger or-shark teeth, or leather straps, etc.
ZeitZeuge – the different jewelry for men. but . . . also worn by women, of course!
My aim is now to add more and more finesse to my work. Moving parts in combination with a semi-precious stone are almost standard.
The diversity of the ‘dynamics‘ therefore forms the largest share in my range.
The closure is increasingly also a hidden element in my design, in addition to its durability and the possibility to easily replace worn parts.
ZeitZeuge – are made of parts from an era where technical parts were still very expensive, but due to the digitization of our world, they are slowly being forgotten and are no longer used. They are literally witnesses from the past, a kind of dinosaur that is slowly dying out.
ZeitZeuge – is a technical jewel from a forgotten time…
… there are Flugzeuge, Spielzeuge and now also … Zeitzeuge… ☺
